Closures vs Frontals:What’s
the Difference?

Closures and frontals both create a natural looking hairline and let you leave out sew-i tracks, tape-ins, or wefts — but they’re built differently, styled differently, and suited to different results.

Here’s how to choose between them.

The Quick Answer

Closures cover a smaller area (typically 4×4″or 5×5″) near the front/top of the head and are best when you want a natural part in one general area.

Frontals stretch ear-to-ear (typically 13×4″) and cover the entire hairline, allowing versatile parting and pulled-back styles like ponytails and updos.

If you mostly wear your hair down with a single, consistent part, a closure is often enough. If you want the flexibility to change your part or wear your hair up, a frontal is the better investment.

How Each One Works

Closures are a smaller piece of lace with hair hand-tied into it, sewn or glued into a small opening left at the top of an install to mimic a natural part and scalp.

Frontals are a wider lace piece that runs fromear to ear along the hair line, sewn or glued down across the entire front of the head — replacing the natural hairline entirely rather than filling a small section.

Comparing Coverage and Versatility

Longevity

Both last 6–8 weeks per install before needing tobe reset, and the lace itself, with proper care, can typically be reused across 3–5 installs beforeit needs replacing. Frontals see slightly more wear over time simply because they cover more surface area and are handled more during styling— but the difference is modest if both are cared for the same way.

Which Should You Use?

Choose a closure if:

You wear your hair down most of the time with a consistent part.

You want a simpler, faster, more affordable install.

you’re new to lace installs and want to start with something more manageable.

Choose a frontal if:

You like to switch up your part or pull your hair back into ponytails/updos.

You want the most natural-looking, versatile hairline.

You’re comfortable with a longer application and more careful maintenance.

Caring for Lace Closures and Frontals

Clean the lace gently with a soft-bristle brushand alcohol-free cleanser to remove product buildup avoid heavy oils directly on the lace — they can loosen the bond and yellow the lace overtime.

Use a silk or satin scarf at night to protect the hairline from friction.

Follow the same washing and conditioning routine as the rest of the hair (see our guideon caring for human hair wigs and extensions, which applies to closures and Frontals too)

FAQ

Can a closure be styled with a middle or side part only?

Most closures are made for one general parting area (often marketed as “free part,” meaning a small range rather than anywhere across the head) — check the specific product description, since flexibility varies by closure.

Do frontals look more natural than closures?

Both can look very natural when installed andtinted to match the scalp correctly.

Frontals offer more natural movement across the whole hairline, which matters more if you frequently change your part or pull your hair back.

Can I swim or work out with a closure or frontalin stalled?

Yes, once fully bonded/sewn — just rinse with fresh water afterwards and avoid excessive chlorine or salt water exposure, which can loosen the bond faster.

How do I know which size to order?

Measure your natural hairline width if choosing a frontal, and consider how much of your part you want covered for a closure — as a general guide, most customers with a single consistent part do well with a 4×4″ closure, while those wanting full hairline flexibility choose a 13×4″ frontal.
